Posted Elsewhere: Shampoo-Free

I had the pleasure of guest posting at Sorta Crunchy today about shampoo-free living. Yes, I know this calls into question all of my claims of not being a hippie, but I thought I'd direct you over there anyway and let you judge for yourself. Perhaps "sorta crunchy" is a more acceptable label for me than "hippie". I think that is because "hippie" carries all sorts of philosophical underpinnings that I shy away from being a descriptor for my own philosophical commitments. Perhaps I'll elucidate that further at another time.

I know May has been my slowest posting month ever, and I apologize to my faithful readers, but I have been too busy enjoying life apart from the computer! I do have some pictures to post soon of our garden, and perhaps an update on the pregnancy and life in general. Hopefully June will allow a bit more time to put some of my thoughts back down here, if for nothing else, to continue to capture this phase of life before I become a mother of THREE. Crazy.

Anyhow, for the moment, enjoy perusing Sorta Crunchy.

How dare you enjoy life apart from the computer! ;o) That's a great post, and, really, I'm so happy for you in your growing garden and family.

We really need to make a date to discuss names. Seriously, where did that weekend go when you were up here? Hope you had a great time.

But can you make enough of each to fill a bottle of "shampoo" and a bottle of "conditioner"?? I need simplicity and convenience in the shower.

This post is eerily timely, this morning I read a post and decided to make my own natural deodorant because the stuff at Whole Foods isn't cutting it, and then Melanie emailed me a link about washing and moisturizing your face with oil which I now also want to try, and then the no 'poo thing from you which I'm finally convinced is worth a shot. I agree with the hippie label thing, so many different versions for different reasons, we need more names!

Deanna - Thanks for checking out the other post and testifying about my hair! You seem to be off the computer world lately as well.

Mrs. Boo - Seriously that weekend was so nice. I think the sun evaporated our time. Another name chat is definitely in order.

Jen - You can definitely keep a bottle of ACV in the shower, but it needs to be in glass. I don't know if you could keep it pre-diluted as it might convert the water into vinegar (but I just dilute it with shower water anyway in the cup I put my ends into). As for the baking soda....I imagine you could keep a bottle of it premixed, but I like it better as a thick paste. You would also have to make sure to shake it really well as I think the water and baking soda would separate between washings. If you try it let me know!

Sarah - I would love to know how the natural deodorant goes. I've had the same crystal stick thing for a long time that seems to work okay for me, but I'd love something where I really know all the ingredients. Washing your face with oil? What kind....I feel like my face produces enough oil that it would make me nervous to put more on. I'll be curious to hear your report on the baking soda/ACV hair washing! You and I should also work up some new language to talk about our "natural" status.

On our way to pick up the CSA box last week we had this very discussion. Although you would lean heavier to the category, what with making your own yogurt and not using shampoo, but anyways, back to my point...we aren't hippies. We're nothing at all like hippies really when it comes down to who was "named" a hippie back in the day.

so what are we? we're trying to come up with a new term for those of us that are socially/globally conscious, buy directly from a farmer, stay away from chemicals, dream of having chickens or a mini cow in the backyard, or already have them...

what are we? crunchy is sooo not going to work for me....so?

I think I'll have to think on it more, we only came up with lame blends of hippie. But for some reason I think it should end in "ter" like hipster.

Meg - Good, more minds at work for our self-definition project are needed. I don't love the label crunchy either. You'd think there'd be some label out there already given how much our culture obsesses with having things/people neatly labeled in boxes!

Thanks for checking out the Sorta Crunchy post!

natster ? Natural hipster combo?

this is my first attempt, I'm still working on it.

I don't know....makes me think of something you'd try to come out of the back of your hair.....earthster? consciounista? no...I think that's too hard to spell. Oi...for now I guess I'm just still "not a hippie".

Hi Marianne:
I found your shampoo-free post (on SortaCrunchy)this morning and thought I'd give it a try. I was really pleased with the results (my hair's shiny and dried super fast). The only thing I had trouble with was the 1:1 water/baking soda mix. You described the consistency as pasty. Mine was more soupy. Is this the way it should be?

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for stopping by to let me know you tried it out. I am glad that you were pleased with your hair.

Sorry about the 1:1 recommendation. I do not actually measure, but guesstimate that I use 2 Tbsp baking soda and just enough water to make it a paste. I find it easier to measure out and apply to the various parts of my head if it's a paste, though the "soup" will cover your head just as efficiently.

I hope that helps!
